How To Beat The Recession

What a great headline! Got your attention didn’t it? Anybody know how?

The ‘economic downturn’ is certainly not going to go away any time soon. In Bournemouth we have seen the number of Pet Shops and Pet retailers halve in the past eighteen months. I guess that most of this is down to the recession but a lot of it can also be blamed on the increase in online retailers. Online retailers mostly have very little overhead and will buy in stock to fulfil your order. With a mark-up sometimes less than 10% they sell cheap but offer little else. It is no good me ranting on about how good shops are and how you’d never get the help anywhere else and the choice....and the poor shopkeeper....bla bla bla.

In a recession, when you haven’t got a lot of money then saving a few pennies here and there really makes sense! But.......and here it comes.....does it really? How many times has your delivery been delayed? How many times has the product turned up broken? How many times does the description of the goods not really fit into the reality? AND....How many times have you bought something you didn’t really need?


Face to face discussions, listening to another opinion, thinking ‘outside the box’ and most importantly getting the advice and tips that you need to take your hobby in the right direction; this is what a shop offers. If only. Of course not all of them do. And some shops may drive you to never leaving the comfort of your internet world again. But we think we do help and we do listen and mostly we give sound, healthy, money-saving advice that’ll keep you in the hobby for years to come.
